Photography Review

  1.  An adjustable hole in the lens that lets a certain amount of light in the camera; The speed at which the shutter closes; The camera sensitivity to light.
  2. Higher ISO is needed in sports or low light and Lower ISO is needed when shooting outside or when you have good aperture
  3.  In TV mode you control the shutter speed and the camera controls the other settings; In AV mode everything in the camera is set for you after you decide the aperture.
  4. Different Auto Focus modes that vary use of certain situations.
  5. To get accurate exposure results
  6. To adjust the camera for the different lighting situations the subject may be in. An example to use this is when shooting with tungsten light it will look blue, but setting the camera for the tungsten light mode, it will appear gold now..
  7. Depth of field is the difference between what is focused in the foreground and the background. Shallow depth of field has only the subject and foreground focused, while sharp depth of field has everything in focus.
  8. The different shooting modes in the camera ie. single shooting; the different ways the camera determines exposure.
  9. When you manually pick exposure settings the camera wouldn’t set to lighten or darken images.

Why being  a photographer is (probably) the best job in the world

I would like to go into the field of photography because although it is hard work it’s amazing making a living on what’s essentially a hobby. Reasons why being a professional photographer is a great idea is because it’s easy to get into. Anyone can pick up a camera and pick a subject, either by yourself or with a group of photographer friends. Another reason to get into photography is because it’s a current business where there is now a high demand for content then maybe 15 years ago. Also there is an option of becoming a freelance photographer versus part of a business. With being your own boss you get to decide everything between clients, when you work, your image and much more. Being independent also gives the opportunity to grow and see how much potential your business has. Another reason on why people should become professional photographers is because the typical 9-5 can be draining for some people and with being your own boss then you aren’t confined to that life anymore. The inclusion of a flexible schedule is always a plus too that not many people can afford. An additional reason to becoming a freelance photographer is the balance of working to not working or staying home all day editing to going out and taking photos. The reasons to becoming a photographer are endless along with the benefits.

DSLR Powerpoint

  • DSLR- stands for digital single lens reflector
  • DSLR are different because they have a detachable lens.
  • A prime lens only has one focal length
  • A zoom lens has multiple focal lengths
  • Smaller focal lengths have a sharper depth of field therefore used for architecture
  • Middle focal lengths are used more for portraits
  • High focal lengths are used for wildlife
  • AF stands for auto focus
  • MF stands for manual focus
  • ISO is the digital censors sensitivity
  • High ISO makes the pictures grainy
  • A high shutter speed to capture fast action
  • The shutter in a camera is half a circle
  • Typical NTSC frame rate is 30 frames per second
  • Use a tripod when the shutter speed is slow
  • Focal length is divided by the lens diameter
  • A smaller F-stop is actually a bigger aperture
  • A small aperture is a shallow depth of field
  • Cameras have a WB to correct the lighting

Ted Talk

Erik Johansson felt the drawing process lasted till the drawing was finished and it wasn’t art till then. Compared to photography the process isn’t half art its planning and it ends when you “press the trigger.” He also felt that photography was about being at the right place and the right time differing from art where people need talent to draw/paint. He talked about photo-realism, but he wanted to create something that couldn’t be captured with a photograph. He wanted to create and capture an idea rather than a moment. He talks about the process of this photos and how he makes it look so realistic and discusses perspective.

Discussing more about perspective he goes into how he gets the picture he creates. He says perspective tricks our brain into believing something we know is not true or possible. He combines the different photos he takes and, in his words, “combines different realities.” The way he makes his photos look so real is considering the unimportant stuff and really focusing in on them to make the photo look accurate. He follows three rules to make his photos look realistic. The first being to combine two photos they should have the same perspective. Second, they should have the same lighting. The third and last rule is to make the photo look seamless and not being able to figure out where either picture starts or ends.

By following these three rules and also adding other photo techniques the image can turn into one. Johansson talks about how he creates the art he does because it’s easier than finding one place and photographing it. He goes into depth about his plan for his final image and the process it took. He shares a personal opinion and how to achieve a realistic result it’s all about planning and precision. It all comes down to capturing good singular photos but combined together one can achieve a magnificent result.

Tips on Food Photography

When preparing food on a low budget set all that’s needed is a good chef with amazing presentation. For example food should look neat, bright, and appetizing with fresh garnishes. The team you work with including the chef and other photographers goes a long way vs expensive equipment. Another tip for food photography is constantly switching out the plate for something fresh. Seared grill marks with steam still coming out or melted cheese that’s still falling is much more appealing than something cold and hard. Re-plating a dish during production is much easier than trying to make a cold dish look good in post-production. Also details are so important in food photography to make consumers hungry and have their mouth water. Focusing on a simple plating without to much crowding draws attention to whatever the star of the dish is. If the dish or background of the plate is crowded shallow depth of field will force the consumer to look at the only part of the dish in focus. Lastly, with a good team, fresh food, and an attention of detail that might all go to waste without great lighting. Natural light is the best for food photography to get that fresh out the oven look, shooting next to a window is best. However using the daylight-balanced setting is a good substitute if you’re shooting from a studio.

Food Photography Reflection

Jennifer Chong - Los Angeles Food and Still Life Photographer — LA Food Photographer

Although the table is crowded the focal point is still the strawberry smoothie. It’s the center of the image centered between two smaller cups which makes it stand out. When I return to the image I still immediately look at the strawberry smoothie which is why this is such a good photo. Also the lighting with the faint shadows makes the picture look fresh as if the time is summer. The fruits have a great shine on them and the smoothies are beautifully colored. The shadows are scattered and the light looks to be at an angle. Given the background I believe the picture was taken outside with the sun still rising, so around 10 or 11, and a tree was nearby to be the shadow.

Daniel Jackson Architectural Photographer - Philadelphia Area Food Photographer

I really enjoy looking at this picture because the food looks so appetizing and fresh. The juice is almost finished and there is another plate which makes it feel like a family breakfast. The shallow depth of field makes the plate stand out and focuses on the glistening strawberries. The picture as a whole doesn’t look crowded either. The main waffle plate is also off center a bit to also show the strawberries in the back making the dish look more appetizing. Also the lighting is brighter in the back and gets dimmer in the front which leads me to believe the light is coming from a window just behind the waffles.

Photography Career Tree

Starting with the first category I would choose either studio assistant or digital editing technician. These two jobs interest me the most because I feel like I would be able to learn a lot. I also think it would be fun and I enjoy being responsible like a studio assistant would have to be. From the next category commercial photographer because my imagination would allow me to portray brands in a different and unique way where I could make a lot of business. Lastly, if I had the right credentials I would choose cinematographer. I’ve always been interested in making stories and when I was younger I would always film scary “movies” and I want to explore more and grow talent in the videography field.

If I had any of these jobs I would either want to work in L.A because although there is a lot of competition that is where all the work is. I would also like to work in Europe especially as cinematographer because of the amazing scenery I’ll be able to find and capture. I also think euro-centric features are very bold and would be fun to work with. As a studio assistant I would have to maintain equipment, schedule clients and organize documents, among other things as well. A commercial photographer showcase businesses, their employees, and products. Also a cinematographer would direct the overall look and visual style of a motion picture, music video, or TV show.  starting from my first potential job and working in L.A my salaries would range from 32,000- 87,000-130,000.

I love photography very much and I wouldn’t ever want to lose my passion. That being said I feel if I turned my hobby into a career I would grow to hate it and be stressed from it. Maybe not, but I wouldn’t want to take the risk of having this pressure to take pictures that it wouldn’t feel as relaxing it once was. Therefore instead I would pursue a career in the criminal justice system. I already have college plans to study criminology and become a lawyer later in life. I don’t want to leave out photography though so to make time for my passion I also want to minor in photography, grow my skills, and hopefully carry out my plans to travel and take picture of the world.
